It may have taken a few months longer than expected, but today I'm happy to announce that Nottingham 2.0 is out of beta and now available.
I covered most of Nottingham's new features in January when I announced the first public beta release. But here's a recap...

Nottingham has always had automatic in-app updates built-in. However, 2.0 changes how those work slightly, and I wanted to take a minute and explain the changes.
With the huge success of the iOS App Store — and the new Mac App Store — Apple provides automatic update notifications to users whenever there's a new version of an app available. These notifications are baked into the OS and always present.
I've decided to follow suit and have made Nottingham's update checks mandatory. In other words, there's no longer a setting in the Preferences to turn off automatic updates. This doesn't mean you have to download and install the new update — you're free to ignore it — but Nottingham will prompt you to update the first time it sees the new version is available.
I'm making this change because I believe it's important to get fixes and updates out to you as quickly as possible. Previously, Nottingham would check for new versions about once a week. I've increased that to once per day in this new release. I think timeliness is critical for an app like Nottingham that stores your personal information (your notes). If a bug was discovered in Nottingham that caused you to lose data, I want to be sure I can push a fix out as quickly as possible. Sure, I could write a blog post or a tweet alerting users, but there's no guarantee you'll see it in time. I hope you'll agree the more frequent checks are worthwhile.
Another reason for the change is this puts the downloadable version of Nottingham on par with how updates work in the Mac App Store version (due out later this month). App Store users will get notified of updates (via Apple) the same day they're available. This change helps me ensure the rest of you get alerted as well.
So why am I calling this out explicitly? Because there are a lot of users who worry (justifiably) about apps "phoning home" or playing fast and loose with their personal data. Above all things, I want to maintain the trust of you, my users, which is why I'm doing my best to tell you all this up-front.
Typically, when a Mac app checks for an update, it also sends along anonymous usage information like what version of OS X you're running or what kind of Mac you have. These stats help developers choose which Macs to support in future versions of their apps. Still, users have always been able to opt-out of sending this information or turn off automatic updates completely. But since that's no longer and option in Nottingham, I've gone the extra step of no longer sending the usage data either. I hope this compromise will assuage any worries you might have about the app automatically checking for updates. To be clear, absolutely no information is sent along with the update check. If that should ever change, I'll add back in a Preference to let users opt-out (which will be the default) ahead of time.

For those users who are still worried and really don't like the idea of apps checking for updates, I've left a "back door" method in place for you to turn them off if you really want to. Just open up a Terminal window and run this command:
defaults write com.clickonideas.web.nottingham SUEnableAutomaticChecks -boolean NO
That will disable the update checking.
